Breathe It In: Making Fall Memories Your Child Will Carry Forever

There's nothing quite like the smell of a newborn. Watch anyone handed a tiny, sleepy baby — they'll pull them close, breathe in deep, and let that sweet, milky scent settle somewhere soft in their memory.

Scent has a way of doing that. It slips past our defences and goes straight to the places where we keep our most tender memories.

I learned this firsthand. When I was a teenager, I lived in Belgium — and I didn't realize how deeply that place had marked me until I flew back as an adult. The moment I stepped off the plane, a familiar smell wrapped around me, and suddenly I was sixteen again, grinning like I'd been given a gift. My heart remembered before my brain caught up.

Of course, not every scent is a happy one. The antiseptic hush of a hospital corridor can pull us back to a harder season — a loved one's treatment, a scary diagnosis, a slow recovery. Smells carry weight. They shape how safe, settled, and joyful we feel, more than most of us ever pause to notice.

Here's a fact I love sharing in my prenatal classes: your baby knows you by smell within hours of birth. Through feeding from the body, skin-to-skin closeness, and all those quiet physiological rhythms of early life, your little one learns your unique scent — and learns that it means home. To a newborn, your smell is safety. It's the first language they understand.

Think about that. Of all their senses, smell is one of the only ones they can fully trust from day one. No wonder it holds such power over us, too — one whiff of a long-forgotten scent and we're transported.

Which brings me to this glorious, golden time of year. Fall is here: pumpkin flesh under fingernails, crisp leaves underfoot, the sweet tang of apples in the orchard. The season has a fragrance, and it's everywhere.

So let's give our children something beautiful to store away. Take them to the corn maze. Go on the hayride. Pick apples at a local farm. Snap a few photos for the grid, sure — but more than that, pause. Close your eyes. Breathe in the smell of small hands, big skies, and time spent together.

Because these are the scents they'll carry with them for a lifetime. And one day, years from now, when autumn rolls around and a familiar smell catches them off guard, they'll smile — and remember exactly what it felt like to be this loved.
