Your Adventures Don't End When Parenthood Begins

You wake before dawn, coffee warming your hands as you settle onto the smooth rock at the edge of a quiet lake. The morning mist hangs low over the water while the sun slowly rises beyond the trees. Your canoe rests where you pulled it ashore the night before, and the scent of last evening's campfire still lingers in your hair.

The birds are beginning their morning chorus. Tiny fish ripple the glass-like surface, chasing insects drifting downstream.

For a moment, everything feels perfect.

At your feet, your 18-month-old giggles as they splash their hands in the shallow water, fascinated by smooth stones, pinecones, and the tiny waves washing onto shore.

Wait...

That's not the picture you imagined, is it?

Why not?

Somewhere along the way we've been taught that becoming parents means packing more things than memories. The wipe warmer. The diaper pail. The entertainment centre disguised as a stroller. Bags of toys. Bags for the bags. Equipment for every possible scenario.

We've been convinced that our babies need all of it.

The truth?

Our children only need many of those things because we've been taught they do.

Babies are remarkably adaptable. Toddlers can spend an hour happily investigating a stick, a puddle, or a handful of pebbles. They are curious by nature. They crave discovery. And, most of all, they want to be with you.

You are their favourite place to be.

That thought came back to me recently while I sat beside a parent on a flight home. Their nine-month-old slept peacefully in their arms after a holiday with old college friends. They hadn't packed an entire nursery. They packed confidence, flexibility, and just enough.

They chose not to stop living simply because they had become parents.

Too often we assume that children mean the adventures have to end.

Or that travel becomes stressful.

Or that everything has to revolve around keeping a child constantly entertained.

But what if that's simply not true?

I was reminded of another conversation with a couple who spent years throwing backpacks into the back of their Subaru, strapping their canoe to the roof, and disappearing into the wilderness whenever they had a free weekend.

Then their child arrived.

Suddenly they wondered if those adventures belonged to their "old life."

Were they destined to become all-inclusive resort parents simply because it felt safer?

Would they have to wait years before they could explore the outdoors again?

We often fall into the trap of thinking life is all-or-nothing.

Either you're adventurous...

...or you're a parent.

But those things don't have to compete.

Sometimes they simply need to evolve.

Instead of a two-week canoe trip filled with multiple portages, perhaps your first adventure is a single weekend on a quiet lake.

Instead of covering dozens of kilometres, maybe you spend the afternoon exploring one shoreline.

You choose the right life jackets. Pack clothing for the weather. Plan around naps. Learn what safety equipment gives you confidence. Reduce the risks you can control while embracing the joy of everything your child is about to experience.

Little by little, your child grows into the lifestyle your family loves.

The same is true whether your dream is camping, travelling internationally, hiking, road-tripping, flying overseas, or simply feeling confident enough to spend a day exploring somewhere new.

Parenthood shouldn't mean giving up the life you imagined.

It means learning how to bring your child along for the adventure.

That's exactly why babyREADY exists.

For nearly three decades, we've helped growing families replace fear with confidence. We help parents separate the myths from the realities of life with babies, offering practical guidance that fits your family, your values, and your dreams—not someone else's checklist.

Whether you're preparing for your first baby, wondering how to travel confidently with an infant, navigating feeding, sleep, parenting, or simply trying to figure out what you actually need, you don't have to do it alone.

Because sometimes all it takes is someone who's been there to say,

"Yes...you can absolutely do this. Here's how."

So go ahead.

Close your eyes.

Dream about the adventures you want your family to have.

Then let's build a plan together that helps make those dreams possible—safely, confidently, and with the kind of support that lets you spend less time worrying and more time making memories.

Every family has a beginning.

We'd be honoured to be part of yours.
